Where's My Refund?

Income Tax Refund Status Online Access You can check your refund status online at refund.tax.utah.gov.

It can take up to 90 days to process your return and refund, depending on when and how it was filed. If you filed electronically, you should have your refund in 14 to 21 days. If you mailed a paper return near April 15, your refund may take longer.

All refund checks and direct deposits are issued by the State Department of Finance.

You can check your refund status by calling 801-297-2200 or 1-800-662-4335 (outside the Salt Lake area) between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, or online at refund.tax.utah.gov. To use this service, you'll need to provide the Social Security Number and FAGI used on your return.

Certain situations may slow down your refund. Common problems and their solutions are:

  • New address – If your check was mailed to an old address, it will be returned to the State Department of Finance. Contact the State Tax Commission (801-297-2200 or 800-662-4335) to get the check number. Then contact the Department of Finance at 801-538-3200 to have your check forwarded to your new address.
  • You owe state taxes for other years – If you owe on any other tax period or tax type, your refund will be applied to those balances. Any remaining amount will be refunded to you.
  • You owe federal or state debts – Your refund may be applied to any outstanding federal or state debt. If you did not receive your refund, contact the State Tax Commission (801-297-2200 or 800-662-4335) to get the refund check number. Then contact the Department of Finance at 801-538-3200. The Tax Commission does not have record of refunds applied to other debts.
  • Direct deposit – If you chose direct deposit of your refund, it will be deposited directly into the account you specified on the return. However, you will not get a notice from the state when your refund is issued. Contact your financial institution to find out if your refund has been deposited.
  • Direct deposit errors – If the routing number and/or account number for your financial institution were incorrect on your return, your refund will be delayed. If your financial institution rejects your request for direct deposit, you will receive a check by mail.
  • Error on your return – Occasionally, an error results in a smaller refund or you owing tax. If your return was changed due to an error or other reason, you will receive a written notice. The notice will tell you how to contact the Tax Commission for more information.
  • Your refund was applied to the next year's taxes – You may apply all or part of your refund to next year's taxes. Your refund will be reduced by the amount you want applied. You will not receive a check if the entire refund is applied to the following year.
