Free Federal and State Tax Filing Sources
Rather than paying for expensive software, you can electronically file your taxes for free using one of many free options, even for taxpayers with higher incomes. Choose any of these for more information.
How Do Commercial Software Products and Websites Work?
To use a commercial software product or website, you either buy software and install it on your computer, or you use the product at the provider’s website. Then, using their product or service, you answer questions about your income, withholding, dependents, deductions, etc., and the software or website does the work for you.
After you’ve finished your return, the service will offer to electronically submit your state and federal returns. Some services give you the option of printing your return so you can submit by paper. However, choosing the e-filing option is inexpensive (in some cases it’s even free), and ensures your return is sent quickly and accurately. If you’re expecting a refund, choose e-file to get your refund as fast as possible.
After the electronic filing service transmits your return information to the IRS and the Tax Commission, we will acknowledge receiving your return within 48 hours of submission.
Do not send a paper copy of your return to the IRS or the Tax Commission if you file electronically.
If you owe tax, you can still e-file early and pay your balance due by the due date. See Payment Methods.
Follow the product or website’s instructions to have your refund electronically deposited into your bank or credit union account.
Many private software developers provide products or online services you can use to complete and file your tax return. Remember that some of these are commercial products and these companies generally charge a fee. Check the Free Federal and State Tax Filing Sources below if you’re looking for free filing methods. The free options are provided by reputable, safe, and secure providers and can help you save the cost of paying for a commercial provider or software.
When you use a software provider to file your taxes, your return is processed at a different location than the Utah State Tax Commission. The Tax Commission does not contract with any commercial software provider and does not guarantee returns prepared by these commercial companies will be correct. Also remember you will need to get technical support from the software provider.
